Introduction to Taxes in OpenCart
Written by Tim SissonTaxes can be an important aspect of your OpenCart shopping cart. Depending on the laws where you operate your business it may be necessary to charge some or all of your customers tax. It’s important to understand how taxes work in OpenCart.
- Geo Zone: a geographical region to specify in OpenCart – This can be a multiple states or entire countries
- Tax Class: This is a type of product to apply a tax rate to and can be based on shipping address, payment address, or store address
- Tax Rate: This is the actual rate of tax to be applied to a specific Geo Zone
Each product you set up is assigned to a tax class. This tax class is defined by a tax rate assigned to it. Each tax rate then has a geo zone assigned to it.
