In a previous article, we showed you how to create a List All Categories menu item in Joomla 2.5. In this article, we will expand further upon the Categories Options settings for the List All Categories menu item.

categories-options

Top Level Category Description

When you create a new category in Joomla 2.5, you have the option to type in a description for the category. Top level category description allows you to toggle whether to show or hide the description you typed in.

Hide Top Level Category Description Show Top Level Category Description

Top Level Category Description (2)

If you decide to show the description, you have the option to type in a new description. For example, let's say the original category description is too long, you can show instead a shorter category description.

Subcategory Levels

If the categories you're showing have categories themselves, you can toggle whether to show those as well or not. This setting controls how many levels of subcategories to show. If you want to show a subcategory of a category, you have to set this value to a minimum of 2.

Empty Categories

An empty category is one that has no subcategories or articles. If you don't want to show empty categories, set this option to hide.

Subcategory Descriptions

Just like you can toggle if the category description is shown, you can toggle whether the descriptions for subcategories are shown as well.

# Articles in Category

By default, the number of articles within each category will be shown, such as Article Count: 7. If you'd like, you can toggle this setting so that you can hide this number.

We can put 'Top Level Category Description' in category option in a simple textbox, but what about if I want to put a more customized description for Top Level Category Description in a real text editor like in articles.
Is there a way to do it?
Thanks a lot :)

Hello Melikes,

We took a look at seeing if it was possible to use HTML in the editor, but it strips out the code. We were able edit it directly on phpmyadmin and put code there, but bringing it back into the editor would strip out the code. We are not familiar with any extension or plugin that might possibly replace the simple editor- but that doesn't mean that there isn't one out there. You might want to try that route to meet your needs.

If you have any further questions, please contact technical support or leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

Regards,

Maybe is it possible to make the category description which is on Category Manager: Add A New Articles Category > the main text edit box, to make it visible on the frontend?

Hello Melikes,

Unfortunately, as far we can tell, this is not possible. The structure for the particular edit box and what can be done with them is fairly static -at least per their standard interface. You may want to look for a plugin or extension to add the functionality that you're seeking.

If you have any further questions, please contact technical support or leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

Is there any way that the sub-categories DO NOT show or lay out as some sort of 'cascade'? I want them to show as columns. I'm using category blog on joomla 2.5.9 with backandwhite template. you can take a look right here and see what i'm talking about. http://ownyourshirt.com/joomla/our-designs
