Why aren't my images working?

Hi I've been scratching my head for hours trying to figure out why our images have all given up appearing.

I've checked the permissions, I did have a look at the HotLink Protection option which I think may have caused the problem but now it's disabled and still I have no access to any images loaded onto the server.

The message I get is:
--------------------
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /pics/vluk01.png on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This is even when trying simply to add pictures using the website designer.

Please help, I'm stuck now.
