How should you approach applying 301 redirects from a old site to a redesigned site with a new domain name? I have no access to any of the previous hosting information or source code. What will I need to complete this task

Details
• The new site is also on a CMS platform.
• The new site has completely different navigation structure.
• New pages were added.
• The old site has great search result ranking.

Hello Sydney26,

Thank you for your question on 301 redirects. You would not need to know the source code for the old site, but would need to know the exact page URL of both the old and the new sites so you can create the redirect for each page. There will not be a template code that we can give since it will be based on the structures of the old and new sites.

Kindest Regards,
Scott M

Please forgive me for my ignorance on the matter. In what do I actually go about applying the code once I get it. The site is on a CMS platform and I'm using Google Webmaster tools. What tools can I use to complete this task? Thank you so much for responding to this question

Hello Sydney,

You should be able to use the link above to format the different redirects you need. It would also use the htaccess file as CMS programs also use it.

But what I need to know is where do I physically go to apply the redirects. Is this something that is done in the old or new hosting panel or Google Webmaster tools? or Are you referring to the old site Htacces files or the new site htaccess files? I'm mostly confused on where do I need to go to complete this task. Is the hosting panel from either the old or new site or possibly Google Webmaster. Thanks for your patience

Hello Sydney,

They would need to be set up at the htaccess for the URL the person is entering. For example, if they are entering DomainA.com then the htaccess at DomainA would handle the redirect to tell it to go to DomainB.

Oh I think I'm starting to understand it better now. Quick example DomainANew site.com will handle the redirect to tell DomainB the old site where to go. So therefore I guess it wouldn't matter that I have very little information for the old site other than the site url. Did I interrupt that correctly. I think were making a break-though.

Thanks so much.

Hello Sydney,

You will want to put the redirect at the old site so that it redirects to the new site.

In order to place the redirects on the old site. Should I ask my client to give me ftp details and or cpanel details for the old site to place the redirects on the old site? I'm so sorry to bother you, but I think we're arriving closer to an solution.

Hello Sydney,

Yes, you would need access to the files so either cPanel access or FTP access would be fine. That way you could edit the .htaccess file.
