Link to a submenu

If I hoover over the mainmenu-items, submenu's dropdown.
Now I like a submenu dropdown when clicking on a item(link) in a (for example) article.
Is this possible a how to do that?

Using Joomla 3.02, Protostar template
Mainmenu-items set: "external URL"

I'm a little confused. If you can elaborate with more details, we can surely review further.

For example, are you talking about creating a menu within an article based upon where the link actually goes?

Are there any sites that have the functionality that you're referring to?
