Question Asked by Doug Nienhuis

How do I "force" WWW with my WordPress site?

Best Answer not yet chosen
I have a new account with Inmotion and just installed Wordpress on my primary domain. Everything works fine except that the letters www do not appear in the URL in the browser window. I was wondering how I can set things up so that the www shows up when someone visits my site.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Doug,

Thanks for posting your question. If you wish to force www with your WordPress website, you need to check the settings in your WordPress dashboard. Here is a link to WordPress forums explaining how to force www:

Hi Doug,

By editing the database, you essentially did the same thing as going into the settings in WP-Admin. It does the same thing, by editing the field in the table that contains the site URL and Home.

Let me know if you need anything else!

Thanks!

Thanks, Tim for your answer.

I also sent an email to Inmotion support about this, and they replied with a couple of different options. Apparently, there are any number of ways to make sure that www appears in the URL of your site. I really don't know which is the best way. One set of options was far too technical for me, and I didn't even try it. The other was easier, and even though I didn't understand what I was doing, I followed the steps and it worked out fine. This technique involved updating the "Home" and "Site URL" settings which can be found in Cpanel---> phpmyadmin --> yourwordpress database--> wp_options table. Inmotion gave me a link to a website which gave step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

Later on, I discovered that there is a far simpler way to do it. You can just go to your Wordpress admin area and click on the "Settings" tab of the "General" screen. You just add www to the the "Home" and "Site URL" there and you're done. Perhaps the other route - actually updating the settings in the database itself is better for some reason, but I have no idea. It's possible that these two methods accomplish the exact same thing.

Thanks again for your help!
