Question Asked by Becket

How to go about giving FTP login for hired web expert.

Best Answer not yet chosen
Hello,
I have hired a web expert to build my website (coding my web design and setting it up in WP). He said he would need access to my site's cpanel, so as to access the site's FTP details. Also said he would also need database details.
I would like some advice on how to go about this since want to avoid compromising security, by giving access to areas of the platform that should not be exposed to a third party.
(My background:I am not new to web building and hosting: I've built a website before but it was a WYSWYG kind of website)

Thank you for your assistance

Hi Becket,

Thanks for posting your question. I'm more than happy to assist you. Basically, you have a few options for your designer. WordPress is installable in Fantastico de Luxe within cPanel. This is the easiest method to install it as it will create the database and configure it for you. You can install it for him and then provide the credentials to the WordPress Admin. If you dont want to install it, you will need to give him access to cPanel so he can install WordPress. What you can do is change your cPanel password now, and give him the new password. When you are ready to lock him out of cPanel you simply login to cPanel or AMP and change the password.

You can also set up an FTP account within cPanel and provide him with those credentials. This will give him access to all the files but nothing else. Then for the Database access, you can install phpMyAdmin externally, so he can work with that as well. This will limit his access to the cPanel.

Here are a few links outlining various topics you may find helpful:

I hope this helps! Let us know if you need further assistance.

Thanks!

Hi Tim S or somebody else.
It's me again.

I wish to request your help once again.
I was going to let the hired web expert log into the Cpanel, having taken care to change the password Cpanel shared with AMP. Then I noticed that through the Cpanel they would be able to access the AMP through the button "update billing info" that comes under "preferences"( here you find payment details, credit card...)
SO, since Cpanel and Amp are connected through that, I figured it is best to avoid CPanel access altogether.

So now I have installed WP as you advised (a piece of cake... :-)

So my questions are:
1. Is there a way of giving them access to FTP, without them logging into the CPanel? Please explain the steps,( or if you have an article or video that does...)My problem here is that yes, I have created an FTP user, but don't understand through what platform they would access...Mmmm, perhaps what I do not understand is what FTP is all about...

2. For their access to my site's databases do I do that through the "Remote MYSQL button".

Thanks in advance for your responses
Regards,
Becket.
